Australia Entry Requirements for International Tourists (July 2022)
The current travel / entry requirements for visiting Australia as an international tourist.
After a short holiday in the Cook Islands, my next destination is going to be Australia.
I will be flying back to New Zealand from the Cook Islands, and then flying from New Zealand to Australia (Sydney) on the same day.
Here are the current travel and entry requirements to go to Australia from New Zealand (July 2022).
COVID-related requirements for international travellers
Australia has been open to international travellers that are fully vaccinated since February 2022. Here are the main points to know:
- COVID-19 pre-departure test is NOT required 🎉
- Must be able to provide official documentaion/proof of being fully vaccinated (e.g. two dosages of Pfizer vaccine – see official list of examples).
- Must complete DPD (Digital Passenger Declaration) before flight. You can complete the form up to 7 days before flight. It includes your recent travel history, vaccination records, and some other basic things. Form is available by mobile app (iPhone / Android), or online form
- Additional quarantine requirements may depend on state (see full list here) – E.g. For New South Wales (i.e. Sydney), there are currently no mandatory testing or quarantine requirements.
Standard visa requirements
The standard entry/visa requirements depends on your passport, purpose, and length of stay. Find your visa options here: https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-finder/visit
For myself (i.e. Canadian, on holiday/tourist, staying less than 3 months), I just need to do one thing:
- Apply for Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) through their mobile app. Cost is $20. (App link - iPhone / Android)
If the ETA app doesn't work for some reason, I will need to apply online for a Tourist Stream visa which cost $145, but allows me to stay for up to 12 months.
They should really just make the ETA app an online form; what if you don't have a iPhone or Android phone?
Summary
Overall, travel/entry requirements is pretty slack in Oz. There are only a few main points:
- be fully vaccinated with official proof (i.e. two dosages of Pfzier)
- Complete DPD form online before flight
- Apply for tourist visa through ETA app (iPhone / Android)
