About this site
This site will document my experiences as I start travelling again for the first time since the worldwide COVID pandemic began.
It will have tips, guides, thoughts and stories from all the places I visit.
I hope that it can become a useful resource for another traveller out there.
I've never blogged about anything before, so it feels a bit weird. It's like talking to yourself. Kind of nice though. Almost therapeutic.
A bit about myself and past travels
I'm Canadian, but haven't been living in Canada full time since about 2014.
I've lived and worked in a few different countries since then. To support myself financially, I've done various seasonal jobs, online businesses, and am recently working remotely as a freelance web developer.
Here's some of my personal travel/nomad log (not in chronological order at all).
- Multiple trips to Japan. Also lived there for over one full year on a working holiday. One of my favourite countries. Did three winter seasons working/playing at various ski resorts. One summer working on a dive boat in Okinawa. Got a super tan.
- Two years in and out of Taiwan. Studied Chinese for about 9 months. Made great friends. Remaining time was spent mainly just having fun, and using it as my base for travelling to some other nearby places (i.e. Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong).
- Two month backpacking trip through Western Europe. Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, and England. They sure do love their churches in Europe. Pretty stereotypical backpacker/sightseeing trip, but still lots of fun.
- Two separate trips of 3 months each in China. First trip, studied Chinese in Beijing, and lived with a a local family. Second trip, travelled from Guangdong to Guangxi, then through Yunnan, and up to Sichuan. Both times, I met really great friends, and had probably the best travel experiences in my life.
- Thailand and Singapore for 3 weeks with one of my close friends. Was one of my first big overseas trips, and was probably what got the travel bug started.
- Three and half years in New Zealand with my girlfriend. Mostly on the South Island. One and a half years by choice; the rest because of Covid. New Zealand is a really nice place, and super photogenic, but 3.5 years was a bit long. I think I need to leave before I can properly reflect on it all.
About the name "Nimbus Nomad"
One of my favourite shows as a kid was Dragonball. (Actually, it's still one of my favourites.)
In this show, the main character Goku sometimes travels around on a cloud called the "Flying Nimbus".
I thought to myself, "Man, wouldn't it be cool to fly around on a cloud to go wherever you want." Thus, the name of this site is called "Nimbus Nomad".
